Wet room Flooring at Benmor Medical U.K.

Outline of work:

Prepare subfloor with F.Balls 1200 smoothing compound.
Supply and install 60m2 of Altro Walkway safety flooring.
Flooring was specified to be ‘capped and coved’ 100mm up the wall, welding all joints and internal / external corners so that the floor was 100% water tight.
The installation of this project took 1 day for 2 of our fitters.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”8167,8165,8736″ img_size=”600×250″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Why have wet room Flooring?

  • Domestic – As the population ages, it is no longer unusual to hear of people who are experiencing difficulties in using baths and/or showers safely, therefore a wetroom may be the answer in there bathroom.
  • Commercial – The wet room flooring that we have just supplied and installed at Benmor Medical was for a designated area in which medical equipment could be taken into and washed down, the non slip properties in the floor ensured that staff come walk safely on the wet floor.

What does wet room flooring offer?

In a domestic environment wet room flooring provides easy-access showering for wheelchairs and anyone with mobility restrictions.

A wet room can provide a “walk in” environment which need not be confined to the size of standard shower trays, in fact the whole room is waterproofed allowing for a much larger showering area.

The Altro Marine and Polysafe Hydro that we supply are the most suited products for this environment, they have the raised studs in the floor which provide extra grip for the person when showering, thus reducing the risk of a slip.

In a commercial environment as with Benmor medical wet room flooring plays a major part of some commercial environments. We have also supplied and installed this flooring in the shower areas of football changing rooms, cold rooms (for storing frozen foods), changing rooms and many more.

Wet room flooring is key for an area like a changing room in a swimming baths or leisure facility. People will shower and walk back to their changing area before drying off, this will leave water on the floor creating a slip risk to others, non slip flooring will lower the risk of someone slipping. At the end of the day or designated intervals throughout the day the cleaning staff can hose down the floor and push all of the water back to the draining area, this is essential when they need be quick during certain intervals throughout the day and essential for keeping on top of cleanliness.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

What to look for when having a wet room flooring installed.

  • Ensure that the installer is using a quality brand like Altro of Polysafe, these floors are well known in the industry and do not fail if installed correctly.
  • Ensure that all corners and joints are welded correctly and NOT siliconed as some installers will think that this is satisfactory and it is definitely not.
  • Check the slip rating of the floor that the installer is suggesting, in a wet room for the elderly or disabled I would only supply Altro marine or Polysafe Hydro / Hydro Evolve, these floors have safety aggregates in the vinyl and a raised pimple emboss for added grip and underfoot safety, this is essential for the elderly or some people with certain disabilities.
  • The flooring should go up the wall a minimum of 100mm, this should be capped with a capping strip which is glued sufficiently to the wall leaving no gaps for any water to get behind.
